    No man is an island.

This is perfectly true. No, i am not implying that no man can live without friends. In fact, it is biologically possible to continue to live while leading a solitary life. I am saying that no man wants to be an island, so therefore he is not. And so I come to my discussion of today.

What are friends to you? What value do they hold in your life? Forget your boyfriend or girlfriend, or even your crush, I'm talking about your normal friends. How important are they? And do you feel as if they regard you as friends? A one sided relationship with another person is pretty much useless, or harmful in some cases. Someone, who used to follow you all the time, but suddenly deserts you the moment your in trouble, isn't a friend at all.

A real friend is someone who stays when everyone leaves, someone who picks out your wrongs because they want you to improve, someone who accepts you for who you are, and not for your wealth or looks or anything of the sort. They're the ones who stick by you to the very end because they have faith in you that you can make it. Those who cling on to you for fame and power are no more than what people normally call "fakes".

Moving on, what kind of friend are you? Are you a "fake"? Or are you really true to your friends?

If you're the latter, then ask yourself this: how close are you to everyone else? One of my own close friends once told me this: Friends need a mutual understanding between one another; especially close friends. This is something I absolutely agree with. You know you're close to each other when you're not afraid to keep your thoughts to yourself because you know the other party won't be offended.

When you're in trouble, when you're in need. Without someone by your side, its difficult to cope with the mental stress. And that's when your allies come in - they're the people who are willing to bear the burdens with you and expect nothing in return.

No matter where and no matter when, its important to have a few people by your side. As I mentioned earlier, its absolutely possible to lead a solitary life. But, your life will be, honestly, lousy.

Because life is full of challenges. But the choice to face them alone is yours.

    "Oh, really?"

Paranoia is common amongst us nowadays, especially in a society like this, where backstabbing and lies are rampant in every generation. This doesn't mean that we can't trust anyone at all, but we can't trust them completely at the same time.

Use your sense of logic and determine for yourself whats true and whats not. Whats reliable, whats biased. Whats worth taing into consideration, and what you shouldn't even think about. They always say, "follow your heart", but in this case I have to disagree. Your heart only tells you what you think is right, and what you really want.

But logic and facts are the real deals. The hard part is not letting your emotions interfere in your thought processess. Sometimes when you're finally about to reach a conclusion, your emotions step in and insist that its not true. Humans always want to hear what they want to hear, so its easy to believe your heart and turn a deaf ear to your brain.

Consider the facts, think about your options. Is what he/she says really true? Should I believe it? Why should I believe it? Or why not? These are all the quesitons you must answer before finally deciding to believe someone. Answering them are not as easy as you think, because the answers may be difficult to accept, even if they are true. Trusting what everything everyone has ever said to you is as good as taking every single textbook to school when you only have a few lessons that day. Unecessary, useless and may result in hurting yourself.

Rumours. This is one dangerous plague everyone needs to watch out for. Many of my friends(mostly female) enjoys participating in an activity named gossiping. 90% of what I've heard so far are definitely false. But there are always those who believe everything others say, and in the blink of an eye the rumours spread to the whole school. Sad, isn't it?

To learn to trsut and doubt at the same time, is not easy. But as long as you use your brain and think for yourself, right and wrong will soon become very clear to you.

As for the one person whom you can trust?

    Yourself.

    Once upon a time.

When we were still kids. Toddlers leading a simple life, when the only challenge was to reach things that are on the tabletop. Don't we all miss those times? Those times, when mum and dad were your heros, when younger siblings were your best friends, those days before going out to the playground was replaced by being hunched in front of your laptop Facebooking.

Look at us now. How different can we get?

As a teenager, I confess: sometimes I feel that the world is unfair, that no one understood me, that I was right and everyone else was wrong. Stress is a killer. Rebellion is the norm for us. Where were those days, when there wasn't a single worry in the world, when studies, family, friends and love, did not hold challenges for us? When the world was such a wonderful place?

    Gone.

Over in the blink of an eye.

To cherish. This is what we lack. The ability to cherish what we have. Why, I hear you ask, am I addressing such an issue, an issue that everyone is aware of, a grandma's advice to her grandchildren? Isn't this particularly pointless? No. It is not.

Ask yourself. Have you always known in your heart, that cherishing what you have is the right thing to do? Of course you have. But have you actually felt it? Have you ever really grasped the reality of the situation? Have you ever spared more than just a moment to remind yourself, what you have won't always be? Not everyone are able to do that.

Every morning, when you wake up, who is there to get you your toast? Who's the one who earns the money to buy your toast? Who are the ones teaching you in school? Who are the ones who help you with schoolwork? Who are they, the people always by your side, no matter what? You parents. Your teachers. Your friends. Everyone.

They could all be gone one day.

And when that day comes, the regret will be overpowering.

Thank your mother for getting you breakfast. Bid your father goodbye when he drops you off at school. Greet the teachers whenever you see them. Laugh with your friends and remember the joy. Help your siblings with their work. Little things like these, they help you make the most of your time spent with loved ones.

Because they're the ones whom you should be eternally grateful for.

To cherish them till the end.

    Who are you, really?

Answer this question truthfully. Everything you do, all of your actions, do they really reflect who you are, truly? Or are you doing things just for show, just to get attention?

Opinions. Or, to be more specific, opinions of people around you. Family, friends, everyone. Their opinions have the potential to create enourmous impact on your actions. If you're a male ballet dancer and everyone called you gay, you might consider quitting(This is not entirely true. I am just giving an example.) Yes, I admit, there was a period of time when I disliked playing an intrument just because everyone thought that was useless. In time to come I learned to be proud of what I'm able to do.

Learn to think for yourselves. Are you going to let others perspective of you affect your every move? I shall continue to use the male ballet dancer example. You can feel ashamed of the fact that you do ballet, or you can heck whatever people think and enjoy yourself. Ask yourself: which sounds more reasonable? I believe it's quite obvious.

Your life, your fight. You can choose to abandon your fort due to peer pressure, or you can choose to stand up for what you believe in. Do what you think is best for you. In this case, its good to be "selfish", as this is a matter of personal interest. What people think or say is irrelevant. Do what you want to do and enjoy it.

Take control of your own life today.

You glare at your reflection in your mirror, your zombie-like reflection, covered in wrinkles, dark eyebags and pockmarks. The years have each left its tale to tell on your face, and you are like a weathered tree, jaded and cynical.

Age has stolen all of the positivity and enthusiasm you ever had. The optimism shattered like a window in the storm, the laughter that crinkled your face pulled straight, before being folded once again into age-old folds.

Your heart doesn't forgive. It never sees any reason or rhyme to do so. The man who cheated on you, the woman who betrayed your trust, the daughter-in-law who rebels against you. Won't you have a little mercy, dear? Your eyes betray the bitter resentment you harbour against so many.

You blame the man who cheated on you, an impulsive act that cost him his marriage. No, not even an act. Just straying feelings from a wife who never knew him well. It never once crossed your mind that it could be you. You blame the woman who betrayed your trust, not realizing she had her moments of folly, and that friendships made gold seem like dirt. The daughter-in-law who rebelled, she should never have come into your cosy home. The balance of life was upsetted, the status quo ripped up and thrown away.

Today, you stand hunched over the sink, veins portruding from your calf, the solemn result of gout. You stand bitter and resenting.

Won't you just forgive once, my dear?

    Help.

One word that has been abused over and over again, by people like us. Us. Kids. Teenagers. Adults. Even the elderly. Humans.

The term "help" does not imply that the opposition has to do everything. And yet that happens to be the case. Increasingly, its the helping party doing most of the work(and usually the hardest work, too). I'm not saying that every single case is like that. I am saying that cases like that are becoming more and more rampant among our generation.

    Why?

    There are several possible reasons.

Imagine you're the classmate of a friend, and he or she is doing duty after school. That friend then walks up to you to ask him/her to help sweep the floor. Since you have nothing to do you accept the task. And this friend of yours end up lazing about, chatting to other classmates while you toil and sweat about, cleaning the classroom's dusty floors. Being a friend, what can you do about it? Pick a fight? Cut off all contact with each other? All of that, over a matter of cleaning the floor? Of course not, that will be an incredibly unreasonable(not to mention stupid) thing to do. At most you'll just complain a little and swallow your anger. Humans are prone to take things for granted. They won't appreciate you for doing small things like that for them. This type of thing may not just happen once, too.

One man's behaviour may affect another. See a classmate copying homework and the rest will follow like lemmings junping off a cliff. Similiarily, see someone else abusing the help of others and the rest jump to it. Their subconscience pushes away the inevitable guilt by telling themselves that they're not the only "abusers".

Help is not turning those around us into personal slaves(although you may as well turn younger siblings into them), but rather a plea to family and friends when you need assistance. They are not supposed to do everything for you, either - the bulk of the work still belongs to you.

Help is a gift, one that we must appreciate, remember, and return.

    It is a symbol,

That we are not walking our paths alone.

    Let me ask you something.

If you were given a chance to go back in time, to fix something you've done wrong, to avoid a concequence which, at that time, seemed inevitable, to rewrite an ugly chapter in your life, what will you change? What will you do?

I will choose to change nothing.

    Mistakes.

    Ignorance.

    Unused opportunities.

No. I won't change anything. Because they are what made me who I am today. Every fall, every bruise - every scar which remained with me till this very day, I choose not to change anything. For getting up after a fall is the only way a person can become stronger - in terms of morale, emotional strength...as a person.

    Think about it.

Without all the stupid mistakes, all brainless acts you've committed, will you still be who you are today? Will you be any wiser? Will you have the chance to change for the better?

    Unlikely.

People, don't ever look back on your life. Don't regret anything you've done. Don't mope about the place, complaining about the pathetic things you've done in the past. Nothing you do can change the past.

    What you should do,

is to learn from your mistakes...

and make sure you don't make the same ones again...

    ...Ever.
